iproute2 là công cụ quản lí mạng đời mới, có nhiều chức năng nâng cao và điều thú vị là thuộc dự án mã nguồn mở Linux kernel.
iproute2 sử dụng cơ chế netlink của Linux kernel network subsytem trong khi net-tools cử dụng cơ chế ioctl đã lỗi thời.
Các hệ điều hành Linux bây giờ thường cài iproute2 mặc định thay vì cài net-tools.
Lệnh ip, ss trong iproute2 là cặp đôi nổi bật thay cho ifconfig, netstat của net-tools ngày xưa.
