Mạng máy tính trên Linux ngày xưa không thể thiếu lệnh netstat, ifconfig, route…
Nhiều bash script tới giờ vẫn xài các lệnh netstat, ifconfig, route… vì lí do lịch sử để lại, nếu thay đổi sẽ bị bể rất nhiều thứ.
net-tools là công cụ mạng mặc định trên các hệ điều hành Linux trước đây.
net-tools có các lệnh sau: netstat, arp, ether-wake, ifconfig, ipmaddr, iptunnel, mii-diag, mii-tool, nameif, plipconfig, route, slattach.

netstat (8) - Print network connections, routing tables, interface statistics, masquerade connections, and multicast memberships
arp (8) - manipulate the system ARP cache
ether-wake (8) - A tool to send a Wake-On-LAN "Magic Packet"
ifconfig (8) - configure a network interface
ipmaddr (8) - adds, deletes, and displays multicast addresses
iptunnel (8) - creates, deletes, and displays configured tunnels
mii-diag (8) - Network adapter control and monitoring
mii-tool (8) - view, manipulate media-independent interface status
nameif (8) - name network interfaces based on MAC addresses
plipconfig (8) - fine tune PLIP device parameters
route (8) - show / manipulate the IP routing table
slattach (8) - attach a network interface to a serial line
net-tools được mô tả là công cụ quản lí mạng cơ bản nhưng đã lạc hậu và bị thay thế bằng iproute2.
