Ash shell còn gọi là Almquist shell do được Kenneth Almquist viết ra.

Ash shell là 1 shell nhỏ nhẹ có nguồn gốc từ Bourne shell trên hệ điều hành Unix System V.4 có từ năm 1977.

Ash shell thay thế Bourne shell để chạy trên các bản Unix BSD những năm 1990.

Alpine Linux xài Ash shell là shell mặc định thay vì Bash shell như các Linux distro khác.

Unix shell interpreter

Alpine Linux vẫn có Bash shell như 1 lựa chọn thay thế Ash shell mặc định.
